The passport 8500 has a remote mount kit that has a power light, a warning light, and a mute button. My mod is to use a different set of lights for both power and warning, have them inside of a button that fits in the cigarette lighter spot. There is also a switch to turn of the detector completely. This is all still a work in progress and isn’t fully “implemented” yet. 🙂 Follow the link for details of my scheme.

I also used a simple spst switch, which i might replace with a sexier one later. maybe i’ll get one of those little lexus factory style pushbuttons like the trac/snow buttons are. The other ingredient is a 10 foot phone extension cord. The passport (and the V1 and most
other radar detectors with remote mount things) uses a phone style cord to connect the detector to whatever power source / mount kit they have. So that isn’t shown. But it also means that if i ever switch radar detectors i don’t have to rerun the cord, because the phone cord is already run from the rear view mirror down to the console.
